Medioeval tour: Siena, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni

Siena is well known all over the world for its works of art, its history, the landscape and its medioeval urban setting, but also for its Palio.
Since1995 downtown Siena has become UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity.
The city is the native place of the bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena founded in 1472 and therefore the oldest bank in the world still active since then.
Its works of art and monuments date back from gothic and medioeval times.
The buildings in town are majestic such as Palazzo Comunale in Piazza del Campo (the city hall) while most of the works of art are located in its buildings and churches.
The Duomo is one of the masterpieces of Italy with its coloured marbles while the interior will surprise you far more!

San Gimignano is in the province of Siena, Tuscany.
San Gimignano has been declared as UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity for the medioeval architecture and its historical town centre.
San Gimignano despite various remakings in the 18th and 19th century, is mostly intact in the buildings of the 12th and 13th centuries; it is also a perfect example of urban organization in the Middle ages, in Europe. It is called the Manhattan of the middle ages as in that period there were 50 towers in town. Only 14 are left today in good conditions.

Monteriggioni, situated in the northern extremity of the municipality, stands on top of a low hill whose slopes are dotted with olive trees and vineyards.
The castle was founded during the 13th century by the Republic of Siena.
Its main aim was to create a defensive outpost against its rival, Florence, resisting countless sieges and attacks, one after the other.
The town is architecturally and culturally significant; it hosts several piazzas, and is referenced in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, as well as a playable locale in Ubisoft's video game installments Assassin's Creed.

« [...] però che, come in su la cerchia tonda
Monteriggion di torri si corona,
così la proda che 'l pozzo circonda
torregiavan di mezza la persona
li orribili giganti, cui minaccia
Giove del cielo ancora quando tona »
(Dante Alighieri, Inferno canto XXXI, vv. 40-45)
